The Program
Operating since the fall of 2004, the Collaborative Programme in Ancient History (ColPAH) is a joint venture of the Graduate Programme in Classics at the University of Toronto and the Graduate Programme in History at York University. Through ColPAH, participating students from these two academic units have direct and immediate access to a large pool of shared faculty expertise in Ancient Greek and Roman History, ranging from the Mycenaean period to the Later Roman Empire, and from political and social to economic, cultural and religious history. In terms of numbers of participating faculty, ColPAH is among the largest programmes of its kind in North America and unique in Canada. One guiding principle behind the foundation of ColPAH was to combine the methodological advantages of a training in History with the skills and methodologies that only a Classics Programme can offer; we believe that this unique combination can give our students the training required of ancient historians in the 21st century. ColPAH provides its students with access to a rich blend of intra-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary training and shared supervision, through obligatory courses such as the Programme’s Research Methods Seminar, the various classes offered by faculty at both Universities, and the supervisory committees struck from the two participating units.
