Bio and Research

Alison Keith received her B.A. in Honours Classics from the University of Alberta and completed her M.A. and Ph.D. in Classical Studies at the University of Michigan. She has written extensively about the intersection of gender and genre in Latin literature, and is the author of The Play of Fictions: Studies in Ovid’s Metamorphoses Book 2 (Ann Arbor 1992), Engendering Rome: Women in Latin Epic (Cambridge 2000), Propertius, Poet of Love and Leisure (Duckworth 2008), and a commentary on selections from Latin Epic for Bolchazy-Carducci (2012); the editor of Latin Elegy and Hellenistic Epigram (Cambridge Scholars Press 2011) and a special issue of Mouseion [11.3 (2014)], In memoriam John William Geyssen; and the co-editor of (with Stephen Rupp) Metamorphosis: the Changing Face of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Medieval and Early Modern Europe (Toronto 2007), (with Jonathan Edmondson) Roman Dress and the Fabric of Roman Society (Toronto 2008) and Roman Literary Cultures (Toronto 2016), and (with Jacqueline Fabre-Serris) Women and War in Antiquity (John's Hopkins 2015).

Current projects include a book on Vergil for I.B. Tauris in the series Understanding Classics, a commentary on the fourth book of Ovid’s Metamorphoses for Cambridge University Press, and a SSHRC-funded project on the reception of Ovid’s Metamorphoses in Flavian epic.

She has taught at the University of Toronto since 1988 as successively Assistant, Associate and Full Professor of Classics, and she holds cross-appointments in the Centre for Medieval Studies and the Centre for Comparative Literature as well as the Women and Gender Studies Institute. In the past she has served as Editor of Phoenix, Journal of the Classical Association of Canada (2002-07), and President of the Classical Association of Canada (2010-2012). She is currently Acting Chair of the Department of Classics, Co-Editor (with Jonathan Edmondson) of the Phoenix Supplementary Series (2008- ) and General Editor (with Ingrid Holmberg) of the subseries Phoenix Studies in Gender (2001- ).
