Bio and Research
John Traill is an instructor in CLA201H, Latin and Greek in Scientific Terminology, in the undergraduate Research Opportunities Course, CLA299Y, Biographies of Ancient Athenians, and in the first year seminar course SII 199, Greece's Wonderland. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto in Honours Classics, and holds the A.M. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University. He has spent 2 years as a post-doctoral research associate at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and 8 years at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. He has published 24 books (and served as editor or co-editor of an additional 5) on Greek inscriptions, the topography of Athens and Attica, and on the people of ancient Athens, and for the last 3 decades has directed the ATHENIANS Project, a research venture applying modern electronic technology to ancient data. Based originally at Victoria College and Computer Systems Research Group (later Institute) ATHENIANS is now located in the Department of Classics with 2 websites: www.chass.utoronto.ca/attica (with P. M. W. Matheson) and www.atheniansproject.com (with EMPRESS Embedded Database staff).
