Bio and Research

Jarrett Welsh received degrees in Classics from Davidson College and in Classical Philology from Harvard University, before joining the faculty of the Department of Classics in 2009. His main research interests lie in the areas of Roman literature, drama, and culture of the republican period. He writes on Roman comedy, on the fragments of early Latin literature and drama, and on the working methods of the Latin grammarians and lexicographers whose works have preserved those fragments. Other past and future interests include Varro, Ovid, and the topography of the city of Rome. He is currently writing a book on Roman attitudes in the genre of comedy known as the fabula togata, and is also preparing a full-scale edition, with commentary, of the surviving fragments of that genre.
